Chef at Åby Prison
The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the cycle of crime. If we succeed, society will be safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, remand facilities, and client transport.
Åby Prison is an open prison located in a picturesque environment in Gunsta, just outside Uppsala. The prison has space for 60 male clients. Inmates are offered employment in simple woodwork, kitchen, outdoor work, and service tasks, as well as studies and program interventions. The prison currently has 45 employees who work together to ensure community safety and reduce recidivism.

JOB DESCRIPTION
As a chef, you will work in the kitchen of Åby Prison and be part of a team of 3 people. The prison operates a traditional kitchen responsible for providing lunch and dinner for the 60 inmates. In the long term, the kitchen at Åby Prison will also prepare and package lunch and dinner for inmates at Uppsala Remand. As a chef at the prison, you will prepare approximately 200-250 portions from scratch daily. Some food will need to be portioned. The tasks include all common kitchen duties such as planning, preparation, and cooking of regular and special diets. It also includes standard kitchen tasks that are distributed within the team, as well as self-checks in accordance with applicable legislation.
Inmates at the prison have a duty to be employed, and working in the kitchen is an important part of their employment. This means that as a chef, you will also guide inmates in the kitchen on a daily basis.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for someone who is secure, stable, and has good self-awareness. You enjoy and find it easy to collaborate with others, but you also thrive when working independently. In stressful situations, you remain calm, stable, and controlled. The Swedish Prison and Probation Service, including Åby Prison, is undergoing changes, which means it is important that you are proactive, open to rapid changes, and development-oriented.
Since inmates who are employed partially work in the kitchen, it is also important that you have a good understanding of how individuals absorb knowledge and that you can adapt the way you convey messages.
To thrive and succeed in your role, it is important that you share the fundamental values of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that people can develop. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute to a good working environment with your approach. Since you will be working closely with clients, the job requires that you can act physically if the situation demands it. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.
Requirements
- Restaurant or catering education at the high school level or other education combined with experience deemed relevant by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service
- Ability to express yourself well in spoken and written Swedish
Meritorious
- Experience working in a large kitchen
- Experience working with special diets
- Experience working with self-checks
- Relevant language skills
